not simply to be part of a chorus that simply wanted to talk about president obama not being american enough. but they really wanted him to step up, to deal with the challenges of inequality and injustice in our society. they're important voices. and i don't think we'll see them muted anytime soon. >> back to david rimnick, for a moment. you wrote "the bridge" that documented the president so closely. what change did you see him in these four years? >> he was not the leader of a movement. martin luther king was the leader of a movement. barack obama is a politician. and he encountered politics his first day in office. he encountered things unimaginable. you mentioned the security issue. we've now forgotten on the first day of office, on his inaugural day last time, he came out on stage under the threat of a possible al qaeda attack from somali insurgents. it is long forgotten. but inaugural day was proceeded by this. and then, he began in a near-depression, an economic depression. and he's faced some highly radicalized republican party. he's encountered politics. and george k

, when we were talking about the anti-obesity bush and michelle obama talked about her daughter's bmi being too high. the problem is, the president at the beginning had a goal of keeping kids out of politics, that's a laudable goal and worthy goal. i think he's right about that. the problem is the president when his back was up against the wall issue after issue used references to his other children and as so many other politicians did, use children period and he did that today. the n.r.a. point is about it's a double standard. the obama daughters get protection, of course they get protection, that's not revealing any substantive information, but why shouldn't other families get the same type of protection for their children, not secret service people, but gun protection or self-defense. i think that's the point they were trying to make. >> any objection for the presidents and republicans and democrats have been used for photo opes and the children, and i've seen the president stand up with soldiers, injured soldiers. >> the children of injured soldiers i know bush has probably done t

election. women voters who came out for barack obama talking about the needs of women, the perspective that women bring, and i think that raises the bar for him to show that he is going to put women in these top jobs. i think the white house has been taken aback by the response they've gotten. they feel like he has a pretty good record substantively, but the optics of these opening weeks have not been good for them on this issue. >> their own photo that they released, the white house photo. he was also asked by jackie about reports that he is too imsular and hasn't reached out. i topt play a little bit of that. >> most people who know me know i'm a pretty friendly guy. i like a good party. and, you know, the truth is that, you know, when i was in the senate, i had great relationships over there, and up until the point that i became president, this was not an accusation that you heard very frequently. >> chuck, let's talk about this because, i mean, you know the white house, this president, better than anyone. is this an unfair criticism that he is too surrounded by the very
